San Francisco(Oct28, 2008)—The Resources Defense Council has petitioned the US FDA to ban the use of BPA in food packaging. The petition comes a week after Canadian Gov placed BPA on its list of toxic substances and said that it would draft regulations to ban the importation, sales and advertising of polycarbonate bottles containing BPA. Before this petition, the anti-BPAs will focus on the feeding products for infants 18months or younger. BPA has been a subject of controversy in US, especially on baby bottles and sippy cups. Both Walmart and Toys “R” Us Inc said they would stop selling baby bottles that contain BPA in US sometime next year. Additionally, San Francisco supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier propose a suggestion to pull baby bottles made with BPA from their shelves. Safeway Stores agreed with this request and Whole Food Markwt Inc. has not sold baby bottles with BPA since 2006.
