Sumitomo Chemical Singapore suffered an unexpected outage at its 90,000 tonne/year methyl methacrylate (MMA) line No 3 on Wednesday. It was an unexpected outage due to technical reasons and it was unclear when the restart would take place. The outage means that the planned restart of its downstream 53,000 tonnes/year PMMA line No 2, which had been scheduled for mid-May would have to be postponed. PMMA line 1 with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes/year is also running only at 50%, down from the earlier levels of 70-80%, due to raw material shortage. Sumitomo Chemical also operates 2 other MMA lines at the same site in Singapore – line No 1 with a capacity of 53,000 tonnes/year, which was currently operating at full capacity, and another MMA line No 2 of 80,000 tonnes/year capacity, which has been shut since April 2008 due to protracted technical problems.
