Sinopec Shanghai Gaoqiao's ex-works phenol prices were Yuan 5,500/mt ($804/mt), industry sources said, unchanged from a week ago. However, they said domestic prices had risen to as high as Yuan 5,800/mt over the past week. Buying indications in China hovered around $630/mt CFR, producers said. Meanwhile, they were offering parcels at about $700/mt on a CFR basis, citing firmer prices for benzene feedstock and limited phenol inventories. Deep-sea cargoes of US- and European-origin were recently shipping to China, a local end-user said. On Tuesday, the FOB Korea benchmark for benzene was assessed at $391/mt, up $8/mt from an assessment of $393/mt on the corresponding day last week. Producers need a benzene-phenol spread of $200-300/mt to break even, depending on the production process used. A 1,000-mt parcel was concluded at $690/mt CFR for delivery over March to India. In production news, Mitsui Phenols Singapore restarted its phenol-acetone plant on Pulau Sakra Tuesday. The facility was shut mid-February on poor economics and high inventories. The plant can make 300,000 mt/year of phenol and 180,000 mt/year of acetone. With the restart, overall production will be limited to about 65%. Its parent company in Japan, Mitsui Chemicals, plans to shut a phenol-acetone joint venture plant in Chiba prefecture for a two- to three-week turnaround end-March.
